Summer Newsletter: Mediaeval Mayhem in Battle, East Sussex
Britain is going for all sorts of precious materials with both the Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee just around the corner, and it looks like the weather is celebrating already! Our events calendar is jam-packed over the next few months with a wide variety of exciting goings-on, including the fantastic Medieval Fayre. Remember, only subscribers get the Full Monty, so sit back and enjoy reading what's in store!
On-going: Diamond Jubilee Exhibition
The Battle Museum of Local history opens its lustrous doors again with a special "Diamond Jubilee" exhibition celebrating our world-famous monarchy. You can be proud to be British until the 31st October 2012. Click here for more information.
Tuesday 22nd May - Saturday 22nd June: Louise Giblin's Olympian Series at Saffron Gallery
Louise's Giblin's fantastic body cast sculptures of cherished Olympians, including Dame Kelly Holmes, will be at the Saffron Gallery this summer. Each sculpture is crafted to represent the most important win for the athlete (and make us mere mortals want their figures!) and are all united by the Union Flag. This is first time all five sculptures have been exhibited together – so lucky you! Click here for more information.
Friday 1st June: Opening of the Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Garden
At 6pm, the High Sheriff for East Sussex will be presenting Diamond Jubilee service medals to members of the Police and the Ambulance sevices. The garden is situated in front of Battle Fire Station and complements the Silver Jubilee garden.The Battle Town Band will be providing music and the High Sheriff will formally declare the garden open which has taken nearly two years to build and reclaimed materials are prominent. Sunday 3rd June - Monday 4th June: Medieval Fayre at Abbey Green
Step-back in time for the annual Medieval Fayre on Abbey Green! Celebrating all that is 1066, the day includes a showing of weaponry (from royalty no less!), a may-poling display, a fortune teller, lace-making demonstration, 1066 Falconry and for the little ones, games and pottery-making. With so much on offer, you'll be there quicker than you can say ‘Squire...pass me a flagon of ale'! Admission is free. Click here for more information.
Sunday 3rd June - Friday 8th June: Regal Jubilee Fun at Battle Abbey
Battle Abbey is hosting a rather 'regal' week (oooherrr) of entertainment to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. Come and feel majestic between 10am and 5pm every day with quizzes, games and music from Eddie Upton and The Theatre of Past Delight, to falconry (3rd – 4th) and even a visit from Queen Victoria herself (Time Travellers Go...Royal: 6th - 8th)!! Tuesday 5th June: Yesterdays World Queens Diamond Jubilee Event
Yesterday's World is also celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with an interactive timeline of her life. This is something for the whole family, and best of all, your little princes and princesses go free when they dress up as royalty at this Diamond Jubilee event! Click here for more information.
Tuesday 5th June (12.30pm - 3.30pm): Battle's Jubilee Street Party at Abbey Green
Battle will be celebrating the Queen's Diamond jubilee in true British style with a magnificent street party! There will be a delicious Hog Roast (and of course, cheeky alcoholic drinks!) put on by The Bull Inn and other fantastic goodies from local retailers. Fantastic vintage dance troupe The Cinque Port Lindy Hoppers will also be shaking their stuff on the day. Sunday 1st July: Battle Light Opera Group - ‘Jubilation' at the Recreation Ground, North Trade Road.
Congratulations...and celebrations (of British Musicals) at the Battle Light Opera Group new offering ‘Jubilation' - an extravaganza of singing and dancing that would make even Cliff Richard get up and boogie in his twilight years! Monday 2nd July – Saturday 21st July: Scarecrow Festival – Going for Gold!
In the spirit of the Olympics, 'Battle Going for Gold' is the theme for the 2012 Scarecrow Festival. Eye-catching displays will be put on throughout Battle and everyone is encouraged to pitch in (hay pun). Get a little taste of the action at the Medieval Fayre and make a Jubilee scarecrow (something resembling Prince Phillip one would imagine) or take it home in kit form to complete. Tuesday 10th July: Local Food, Art, Wine & Beer (in association with Battle's Big Event)
Enjoy an exquisite 3 course dinner, local wine and Beer from Cooden Cellars and an Art demonstration by Mark Fisher on Tuesday 10th July. With so much fine alcohol to try, let's hope the paint stays in the right hands! Available at £35.00 per person. Click here for more information.
27th July – 11th August: Louise Giblin's Bodycasting Olympians Solo Show at Saffron Gallery
This exhibition will include the sculptures from May's display, plus her original drawings, photographs and bronze plaques that cover the entire creative process. A beautiful way to feel patriotic we feel! Click here for more information.
Every Tuesday from 31st July – 21st August: Children's Tuesdays at Battle Museum
Take the kids on a magical flight through the History of Falconry during the summer holidays! On offer is the chance to get some real ‘wings-on' experience with these majestic preys of prey as well as Falconry print-making (a token for the old bird at home). School Group rates are £12.00 (15 children) and individual rate is £1.50. Click here for more information.
Every Wednesday from 1st August – 22nd August: Norman Mornings at Battle Museum
From 10.30am – 1pm come and discover some Norman heritage at Battle Museum. Take your pick between changing the course of history by re-drawing the Bayeux Tapestry or making your own Norman shield (don't try the Battle of 1066 at home though!). School Group rates £12.00 per 15 children. Click here for more information.
