Robert: Reply to Robert Campbell Hi Bob, Re the WWII bombing at Battle Abbey, I do now know that the Royal Canadian Engineers Unit posted at Battle Abbey at the time of the bombing was the 3rd Canadian Field Company, R.C.E. and I have a copy of their War Diary Report of that day's events. I would be most interested if you can dig up your info, be it newspaper article, photograph, etc. Thanks. Jack Barry |

Jack Barry: Jack, regarding your message board posting last year regarding the WW2 bombing in Battle High Street. I noticed something on that, maybe a newspaper article and picture a while back, on the Parish of Sedlescombe website. Graham Brown: Graham, I just noticed a message you posted on the Battle Message Board about 12 months ago, regarding the Abbey Hotel which is opposite Battle Abbey. Just this week I received in the mail two old photo/postcards which were posted in Battle in 1905. The pictures were taken looking down the High Street, with the photographer probably set up in front of the Abbey Gates. These show among other things sheep being herded up the High Street, the Star Hotel on one side, with a brewery a few doors further down the High Street. On the right hand side is a large ivy covered building which I am trying to identify, some horse and carts, and a public house called "Abbey Turner Hotel". Is this your establishment? Hi, in the mid 1960's I used to work for a building surveyors called Ramsden and Allen. Their offices were in the High Street at the Battle Abbey gateway, and possibly above a cake/devonshire tea shop. Is the building still there? Cheers Bob in Brisbane |

Hi, I am in Brisbane Australia. Recently arrived in the mail has been two old used photo/postcards dated from 1905. I would like some born and bred in Battle person to identify a couple of buildings which can be seen of the High Street, from in front of the Abbey please. Can send images as attachments.
